A lifetime of fixing things

Don grew up in a family of hands-on tradespeople. When he was young, he worked alongside relatives in several different trades, learning by watching, helping, and doing. Later in life, Don and his dad put that experience to the test by building his dad's forever home and a two-story car barn and workshop in Oklahoma.

That same curiosity followed Don into everything mechanical. He got his first car at 14, a 1964 Plymouth Barracuda. Years later, when Josh was growing up, Don rebuilt it into a street-legal 1/4-mile drag car.

That was simply how things worked in our household. If something broke, calling someone else was rarely the first move. Don usually knew how to fix it. If he did not know right away, he was going to figure it out.

Josh joins the work

While those early handyman jobs were coming in, Josh was running a branding and marketing company and pursuing other business ventures. His involvement with SOS was mostly behind the scenes at first.

When Don needed another person for a job, Josh would reach out to friends, neighbors, and people he knew who were looking for work and could serve as an extra set of hands.

A few months later, a freestanding pergola project needed a third person. Josh agreed to help.

What was supposed to be one more set of hands became the beginning of something much bigger.

Josh enjoyed the problem-solving, the physical work, and being able to stand back at the end of the day and see what they had built. He kept coming back. Over the next several years, Don taught him the trade the same way he had learned it: hands-on, one job at a time.

Don taught him more than how to build. He taught him to notice what others miss, think several steps ahead, respect the customer's property, and never hide poor work behind a finished surface.

Why we are called SOS

As Don and Josh took on more work, they kept hearing different versions of the same story.

Some homeowners had received prices that did not seem to make sense. Others had been sold a dream, only to end up with work that fell far short of what was promised. Some had paid contractors and then gone weeks without hearing from them. In the worst cases, deposits were taken and the work never started.

Those conversations helped define what SOS would stand for.

The idea was simple. Before someone made an expensive decision about their home or property, we wanted them to have a place where they could get an honest second opinion.

Sometimes that meant offering another way to approach the project. Sometimes it meant reviewing another contractor's quote and telling the customer it was fair, even if they did not hire us. It also meant speaking up when a price appeared unreasonably high, or when a bid was so low that important preparation, materials, or finishing steps were probably missing.

Our goal was never to be the cheapest contractor. We wanted to offer an honest middle ground: pricing that was fair to the customer, sustainable for the company, and realistic enough to complete the work without cutting corners.

That philosophy still guides how we work with different needs and budgets today.

Sometimes the right solution is a cost-conscious investor renovation or a safe interim repair that gives the customer time to prepare for a permanent fix. Other times, it is a complete dream remodel using premium materials and the best installation methods available.

We are honest about the difference. A customer's budget may change the scope, materials, finish level, or expected lifespan of a solution. It should never change our responsibility to explain what they are getting and deliver what we agreed to provide.

From Home & Auto to Remodels & Contracting

The company originally operated as SOS Home & Auto. At the time, the name fit because the work included a little bit of everything. As the company grew and its direction became clearer, Josh repositioned and rebranded it as SOS Remodels & Contracting.

The new name better represented the remodeling, construction, and contracting work the company had become known for, but the meaning behind SOS remained the same.

That change did not mean leaving the small jobs behind.

We still take care of home repairs, installations, punch-list work, and the everyday projects people need help getting done. Those jobs are part of how SOS began, and they remain an important part of who we are.

Our capabilities have also grown to include complete home renovations, full-scale remodeling projects, commercial build-outs, and other substantial construction work. Whether the project involves fixing one problem or rebuilding an entire space, it receives the same honest assessment and thoughtful approach.

Where we are today

Today, SOS Remodels & Contracting is a family-owned remodeling and general contracting company serving Katy, Cypress, and the Greater Houston area.

Don brings a lifetime of practical knowledge and problem-solving to the field. Josh manages projects of his own while building the estimating, scheduling, communication, and production systems needed to give clients a more organized contracting experience.

They still spend plenty of days working side by side.

The next chapter is about growing carefully. We are building a dependable team, strengthening our systems, and expanding our ability to manage larger and more complete projects while keeping the personal accountability that got us here.
