LVP vs. tile vs. hardwood: choosing floors for a Houston home

LVP vs. tile vs. hardwood: choosing floors for a Houston home

Flooring is one of the biggest visual decisions in a home and one of the most practical. In our Gulf Coast climate, the right choice also has to stand up to humidity, the occasional water event, and the way slab foundations behave. Here is how the three floors we install most stack up.

Luxury vinyl plank (LVP)

Best for: most homes, most rooms, and families who want low-maintenance durability.

  • Water-resistant, which matters in kitchens, baths, and humid months.
  • Warm and quiet underfoot, forgiving on slab.
  • Looks high-end at a sensible price and installs cleanly across a whole home.

The catch: it is only as good as the subfloor prep beneath it. We cover why in this guide to LVP subfloor prep.

Tile

Best for: bathrooms, entries, laundry, and anywhere water lives.

  • Essentially waterproof when installed and grouted correctly.
  • Extremely durable and cool underfoot in summer.
  • Endless design range, from wood-look plank tile to classic stone.

The trade-offs: it is hard and cold, and a quality install takes skill and time. Poor tile work shows immediately in lippage and uneven grout lines.

Hardwood

Best for: bedrooms and living spaces where you want genuine warmth and long-term value.

  • Timeless look and real resale appeal.
  • Can be refinished rather than replaced.

The honest caution for Houston: solid hardwood and humidity are a tricky pair. Wood moves with moisture, so engineered hardwood is often the smarter pick here, and wood is not the choice for wet areas.

What they cost installed

Installed prices in the Houston area as of 2026, material plus labor: LVP runs about $4 to $9 per square foot, tile about $7 to $18 depending on the tile and the pattern, engineered hardwood about $6 to $14, and solid hardwood about $8 to $20. Subfloor prep and leveling, when a floor needs it, adds roughly $1 to $5 per square foot, and it is the line most worth paying for. For scale, running LVP through a typical 1,800 to 2,500 square foot home usually lands between $8,000 and $22,000 all in, driven by plank quality and how much prep the slab needs.

Mixing them well

Most homes we do are not one floor everywhere. A common, durable plan is LVP through the main living areas, tile in the wet rooms, and engineered wood or LVP in bedrooms, with clean transitions between them. The goal is continuity that still respects what each room needs.

The best floor is the one that fits the room, the climate, and how you live - not just the one that looked good in the showroom.
