Luxury vinyl plank is the most popular flooring we install, and for good reason: it is durable, water-resistant, and looks high-end. But here is the part the low bid never mentions - LVP is only as good as the surface underneath it. The plank is the easy part. The subfloor is where installs succeed or fail.

Why LVP is unforgiving
Because it is a floating, relatively thin product, LVP telegraphs whatever is beneath it. A subfloor that is out of level, has high spots, or holds moisture will show up as peaking seams, hollow spots that click underfoot, or planks that separate over time. None of that is a product defect. It is a prep failure.

What proper prep actually involves
- Flatness check. Manufacturers typically require the floor to be flat within a tight tolerance over a set distance. We check it before we open a single box.
- Grinding and leveling. High spots get ground down, low spots get filled with self-leveling compound. On the slab foundations common across Houston, this step is not optional.
- Moisture control. Concrete slabs can hold and release moisture, especially in our Gulf Coast humidity. We address it so it does not attack your floor from below.
- Clean and dry. Every bit of old adhesive, debris, and dust comes up first. Planks bonded or floated over grit never sit right.
What skipping it costs you
The trouble with a bad subfloor is that it does not show up on install day. It shows up three months later, after the crew is long gone, as gaps and lifting seams. By then the fix is not a touch-up. It is pulling the floor and starting over, which means paying twice. That is the real price of a bid that looked cheaper up front.

Anyone can lay plank. The difference between a floor that lasts and one that fails is almost always what happened before the first board went down.
We prep the subfloor right, handle the heavy lifting of moving furniture and hauling the old floor, and set clean transitions between rooms. See how we approach flooring and tile, or request a free quote for your Houston-area home.
