Cabinet paint vs. replace: which is right for your kitchen?

Cabinet paint vs. replace: which is right for your kitchen?

Cabinets set the entire tone of a kitchen, and they are also the single most expensive line item in most remodels. So the question comes up in nearly every kitchen consultation we do: should we paint the cabinets you have, or replace them? The honest answer depends on three things - the bones, the layout, and your goals.

When painting is the smart move

If your cabinet boxes are solid, the doors are a style you can live with, and the layout already works, refinishing is often the best value in the entire kitchen. A professional cabinet respray can transform a dated kitchen for a fraction of replacement cost, and it keeps a mountain of material out of the landfill.

Good candidates for paint:

  • Solid wood or quality plywood boxes that are structurally sound
  • Doors and drawer fronts in good shape, even if the finish is tired
  • A layout that already functions for how you cook and gather

The key is that cabinet painting is not a weekend roller job. It is degreasing, sanding, priming, and a sprayed finish that cures hard. Done right, it looks factory-smooth. Done wrong, it peels at the first fingernail. This is exactly why we self-perform cabinet painting with proper prep rather than treating it as an afterthought.

When replacing is worth it

Paint cannot fix a bad layout or falling-apart boxes. Replace when:

  • The boxes are particleboard that is swelling, sagging, or water-damaged
  • You want to change the footprint - move the sink, add an island, open a wall
  • You need more storage or modern features like deep drawers and soft-close
  • The door style is so dated that paint alone will not modernize it

The in-between option

Sometimes the right answer is a hybrid: keep and repaint the boxes, but swap the doors and drawer fronts for a new style, then add new hardware. You get a genuinely new look without paying to rebuild the whole kitchen.

A good remodeler will tell you when paint is enough. If someone quotes a full tear-out before they have even looked at your boxes, get a second opinion.
