The kitchen sat behind an arched wall that chopped the first floor into small rooms, and the old island crowded what space was left. Suzzy and Amanda wanted what most families in an older two-story want: one open room where cooking, homework and company can all happen at once.
We took the dividing wall down to its framing, opened the arch into a clean, full-height passage, and wrapped the remaining structure in a sharp black column that reads as a design choice, not a leftover. In the middle of the new space we framed a custom island from scratch, angled to fit the room, topped with warm butcher block and finished with seating for the whole crew.
The finishes pull it together: the original oak uppers painted crisp white over deep charcoal bases, a glazed navy brick backsplash with open wood shelving, matte black fixtures, a built-in wine fridge with accent lighting, and wide-plank luxury vinyl running the whole floor. It reads like a new house from the moment you walk in the front door.
