A walk-in pantry, built beside the fireplace
An empty corner beside a stone fireplace became a walk-in pantry: a new wall framed and finished to match the room, shelving built from scratch inside, and a reeded glass door the homeowner picked, painted white. About a week.
The corner beside the fireplace was dead space: a stretch of wall between the stone and the window that nothing ever used. The homeowner wanted a walk-in pantry there, and she wanted it to look like it had always been part of the room.
We framed the new wall flat on the driveway, carried it in, and stood it in the corner, then hung and floated the drywall. Every new surface was textured to match the existing walls, because a pantry that reads as an add-on is a pantry you notice every day. Then it was painted to match the room.
Inside, we built the shelving from scratch to fit the space, no kit: shelves on three walls, a deep bottom shelf for the heavy things with a fluted post at the corner, all painted white. The little stained glass window in that corner ended up inside the pantry, so it has daylight.
The door was the homeowner’s pick: a reeded glass slab that lets the light through without putting the cereal boxes on display. We hung it, cased it, and painted it white to match the trim. About a week from the first stud to the last coat, and the corner finally earns its keep.
