Interior paint: why prep is 80% of the job

Interior paint: why prep is 80% of the job

Here is the honest secret of a great paint job: the painting itself is the fast part. What separates a finish that looks crisp for years from one that peels and shows every flaw is the prep, and prep is roughly eighty percent of the work. It is also the part a low bid quietly skips.

What real prep looks like

  • Cleaning. Paint does not bond to grease, dust, or grime. Kitchens and baths especially need a proper clean first.
  • Repairs. Filling nail holes, cracks, and dings, then sanding smooth. Fresh paint highlights flaws it does not hide them.
  • Sanding and de-glossing. So the new coat has something to grip.
  • Priming where it counts - patches, stains, bare surfaces, and big color changes.
  • Protecting floors, furniture, and trim, and taping clean lines.

Why it matters more here

Houston humidity is hard on finishes. Poorly prepped paint in a humid bathroom or an exterior exposed to our sun and moisture fails faster - peeling, blistering, and bubbling. Good prep and the right product for the surface are what make the difference between repainting in two years and repainting in ten.

Cabinets are a different animal

Painting cabinets is not the same as painting a wall. It takes degreasing, sanding, the right primer, and a sprayed finish that cures hard enough to survive daily use. Done right it looks factory-smooth. Done as a quick roller job it peels at the first fingernail. That is why we treat cabinet painting as its own craft.

Anyone can put paint on a wall. Making it look sharp and stay that way is all in the hour of prep nobody sees.
