Dede’s bedrooms, carpet out and plank tile in
The last carpeted rooms in Dede’s house: the master bedroom and its closet, and a back bedroom and its closet. We took all four spaces down to the slab, set wood look plank tile through every one of them, and painted the master bedroom a deep charcoal while the floor was open.
The rest of Dede’s house in south Katy was already hard floor. What was left was carpet in the master bedroom and its walk-in closet, and in a back bedroom and its closet. Those four spaces were the job.
We pulled the carpet, pad and tack strips and scraped the slab clean in all four spaces. With the master bedroom empty and the floor open, it was the right moment to paint, so the walls and the inset of the tray ceiling went from builder cream to a deep charcoal before any tile came into the room.
The tile is a wood look plank in a soft gray. Long plank tile is the least forgiving tile to set, because any lip between two long edges catches the light and your foot. We set it in a staggered pattern, spaced every joint, and kept a level on the floor as we went, running the planks through the doorways so each bedroom and its closet read as one floor.
About a week after the carpet came out, the furniture was back in. The master reads as a different room: dark walls, light floor, white trim between them. The back bedroom and both closets got the same floor, grouted and cleaned, ready for whatever the rooms are asked to do next.
