In late December 2024 we poured self-leveling underlayment across a flooded living room in Cypress, let it cure overnight, rolled poly over it and staged the planks a few days later, and laid the planks the day after that. That is the shape of most of our one-room flooring jobs: the planks go down fast, and the calendar goes to what has to happen before the first row. This guide puts day counts from our own jobs side by side, one room to a whole house, so you can read the schedule on a quote and know whether it is realistic.

How long does it take to install vinyl plank flooring in one room?
The Cypress living room is the clearest example we have published, because prep and install fell on different days. The old beige ceramic tile came up, the slab under it was far from flat, and we floated the entire area up to a taped dam at the hall doorway. That cured overnight. A few days later we rolled poly over it and staged the light oak luxury vinyl plank (LVP). The next day we ran the floor from the wall opposite the fireplace to the hearth, and by that evening the whole room was down, front door to the kitchen tile, with a T-mold at the kitchen. Counting the poly and staging day, the floor itself was two site days; the planks were one.
The job ran from the pour, through an overnight cure and a few days of waiting, to the floor, most of it a floor sitting still. When the old floor is carpet and the slab checks flat, a bedroom can be tear-out in the morning and planks in the afternoon. When it is tile, or the slab is out of flat, the leveling days come first.
How long after self leveler can you install flooring?
At the Cypress house the compound cured overnight and we came back to a hard, flat floor. We gave it a few more days before the poly and planks. Each product prints its own cure window on the bag. What we do not skip is checking flatness again after the pour, because a self-leveler finds its own level, not the one you had in mind.

How long does flooring installation take for a whole house?
Britney's house in Katy is the plank job we point people to. Three bedrooms, the living room and the common spaces were carpet; the rest was tile, and that stayed. In April 2025 we pulled the carpet, pad and tack strips and the old peel and stick plank hiding under some of it, swept the slab, set a laser line and rolled out underlayment before the first row of NuCore rigid plank. New baseboards went on after. The carpet to plank guide tells that story in full; its summary holds across our jobs: a whole house of plank is days, not weeks.

A day-by-day shape for a whole-home plank job
In our experience the days usually fall like this, give or take a day:
- Before day one. Walk, measure, check the slab, write the scope. Product delivered, rooms emptied.
- Days one to two: tear-out. Carpet, pad and tack strips out of every room, plus whatever is under them. Slab scraped clean.
- Days two to three: flatness. Grind high spots, fill low ones. A room that needs a full float adds the overnight cure and the few days the Cypress room waited.
- Days three to five: the floor. Underlayment, laser line, planks room by room through the doorways, transitions where new floor meets tile.
- Last day or two: trim. Baseboards or shoe, jambs undercut, walkthrough.
With the rooms empty and a slab that checks flat, that usually lands inside one working week. Leveling is usually what pushes a plank job into a second week. Furniture, stairs and a lot of small rooms tend to stretch the middle days.
How long does it take to install a tile floor?
In our experience tile runs slower than plank for the same square footage. Dede's house in south Katy was already hard floor except the master bedroom and its walk-in closet and a back bedroom and its closet. We pulled the carpet, pad and tack strips, scraped the slab in all four spaces, painted the master charcoal while the room was empty, then set a soft gray wood look plank tile in a staggered pattern with a level on the floor as we went, running through the doorways so each bedroom and its closet read as one floor. Then grout, then cleanup. About a week after the carpet came out, the furniture was back in.
Four spaces, about a week, for two bedrooms and two closets; a whole house of plank at Britney's was days, not weeks. The relationship to carry into a quote: thinset has to set before anyone walks on it, grout is usually its own day, and long plank tile is the least forgiving tile to set. At the small end, Mandana's townhome got a new bath tile floor two days after the main job was done.

What adds days
- Leveling and cure time. One overnight at least, and usually a few days before planks.
- Floor repairs. At Cathy's rental in Tomball, a hump over one beam kept pushing back through flooring that had already been laid once. We opened the kitchen floor over that beam, reframed it flat, leveled, and only then ran one continuous plank floor through the house. Framing before flooring is a step the first floor did not get, and it is why the second one stayed flat.
- Furniture. Every room the crew empties and refills adds time, as does phasing an occupied house.
- Stairs, closets and small rooms. Treads, risers and nosings are usually cut one at a time, and a closet tends to have more cuts per square foot than a living room.
- Tile cuts. Diagonal layouts, large format and plank tile tend to mean more time at the saw and on the level.
- Baseboards and shoe. New baseboards throughout, the way Britney's finished, usually add a trim day of their own.
Time and price move together on floors: chipping up tile takes longer than pulling carpet and costs more, leveling adds in proportion to how far out the slab is, and a repair like Cathy's beam is a separate line the walkthrough either finds or the job finds later. We walk it, measure it, check the slab and write all of it down before we give you a number.

Can you live in the house during flooring installation?
You can, with the rooms being floored empty and a plan for the rest. Dede's house was hard floor everywhere else, so the four carpeted spaces were the whole disruption and the furniture was back in about a week. Britney had just moved into her new house and the carpet was the first thing to go, the easiest timing for this job. At Cyndi's mother's house in Katy, replacing the bedroom carpet with new carpet was one line in a three week make-ready that also opened the walls and the kitchen, and the house was sitting empty. If you are staying, expect tear-out dust and noise on the first days, a leveled room no one walks on overnight, and a tiled floor you stay off until the grout has set.
Does paint come before or after new floors?
Usually paint first, floors second, baseboards last. At Dede's the master went from builder cream to charcoal with the slab bare, before any tile came into the room. At DLG Insurance the full repaint finished before plank went through the whole suite, all inside a 14 day turnaround. The make-ready guide covers the full order for a house going to market; for flooring, nothing should drip on a new floor, and baseboards go on after it to cover the expansion gap.
How to compare a quote's schedule against reality
Put the quote next to the jobs above. In our experience a whole house of plank over a flat slab lands inside a working week; the same house in a day usually means the slab was not checked. A room that needs leveling and is planked the same afternoon has usually not had time to cure. Four tiled spaces in about a week is what we have seen; two days usually means the level or the grout cure was skipped. A plank-only job in an empty house that stretches to three weeks usually has a delivery or a scheduling gap inside it; ask which.
What to ask whoever quotes it
- Have you checked the slab for flatness, and what happens to the schedule if it needs leveling?
- How long after a self-leveler pour will you wait before the floor goes down, and will you re-check flatness?
- Which days are tear-out, install and trim, and do you need the rooms empty on day one?
- Is paint happening before the floor, and are baseboards after it?
- What transitions are you using where plank meets the tile I am keeping?
- If it is tile, which day is grout, and when can we walk on it?
- If the old floor is hiding a problem, like a hump or glued-down plank, how does that change the days?
Done right is cheaper than done twice, and on floors the difference is almost all in the days before the first plank. If you are comparing flooring installers in Katy, Cypress or anywhere in Greater Houston, our luxury vinyl plank page shows how we scope one, and the subfloor prep guide explains the part of the schedule that keeps the floor flat.
